In September 2020, Mark Doodes Planning prepared and submitted an application for a replacement self-build dwelling in the village of Collingbourne Ducis near Marlborough. 

The proposal was to replace an old, unlisted single storey building with a new modern family home, but our clients had already had one application dismissed.

MDP was able to take a fresh approach to the project, highlighting the fact that the proposed new dwelling was not just an improvement to the relatively unattractive existing house but it was more in keeping with a Wiltshire village.

The team also built upon the rejected proposals by developing a design which was slightly smaller, lower, and better reflected the heritage constraints whilst not impinging on any neighbours or the existing street scene.

Working closely with our clients, MDP was able to propose a design that embodied a ‘Barn Conversion’ feel with the introduction of a curved roof in the private side of the building and with a low roof ensuring the structure nestled gently into the site. This ‘Barn Conversion’ theme was further reinforced with the use of timber cladding on the walls of each of the Split Barns and addition of the faux barn doors, which as well as adding to character externally, provided additional light internally.

The result was a planning compliant, energy efficient, beautifully designed modern family home.
